rebuilding mailbox station
As almost always for any "projects" this one turned to be bigger than originally estimated.
However, I am quite happy with the result, and hopefully it will last another 10 to 20 years.
It was about a month ago when I chatted with my neighbor and talked about it. The cedar roof was really dying, but I wasn’t sure if people actually liked the "aged" look or not. I found out not only the one I talked but the other ones were also wondering if we could rebuild it at some point. Since it seemed to be a piece of cake, I took it on, and signed up to rebuild it.
It was indeed fun to work on the project even though I had very limited time mostly during the weekends, There were three challenges; removing old posts, getting some of the materials, and getting rid of the debris.
Removing old posts: There was no way for me to just pull them up, so I cut them at the top of the metal pieces holding them. I just didn’t realize how deep the holes were. I think I ended up spending over 4 hours, or an entire afternoon on the first Saturday to completely remove them. I felt like I became an endodontist to do a rook canal little by little. The holes were like one foot deep under the ground.
Getting materials: I don’t have a big car or a truck, and the distance between the posts was like 10 feet. I decided to recycle the beams used for my backyard deck. I am in the middle of demolishing it, but the beams were actually in good shape. I just had to remove all the nails, and cut them to smaller pieces. I had to use plywood for the roof base, but I didn’t want to buy the big one. I then bought a 8×4 piece, and asked the Home Depot to cut them in 3 pieces. I was then able to carry it/them back home.
Getting rid of the debris: The old roof was removed as is, and I left it on the sidewalk overnight. Some kids from neighbor came, and they ride bicycles on it, or something. When I came home, it was quite messed up, and I realized I’d have to get rid of it off the street. It’s bulky so I decided to cut it in pieces and burn in my fireplace in the living room. It took me a few days, but it worked.
Here is some before and after pictures.
The second set of the pictures don’t look good as if the middle beams are not leveled at all. However, it’s not the case, and the street is very slanted, like one pole is almost one foot longer than the other one.
Anyway, the design goal was to create the station with almost the exact same dimensions, and it turned to be that way even the angle of the roof. I used some water resistant stain to preserve the wood, and asphalt shingles to match the materials of the houses around it. It took me three weekends, but it was worth it.
